Things to do in Dubai for 1 Dirham /3 January 2, 2011
Posted by kieslinger in : Dubai, events , add a commentGoing out in Dubai can be really expensive. Especially when you don’t want to spend the whole night on soft drinks only. And special nights, like Christmas, New Years, etc. can become extremely expensive if you go to one of the many fancy places around town.
BUT, some things are still for free. E.g. watching the impressive Burj Khalifa fireworks on New Year’s Eve. It did not last very long, but it was stunning. Here is one of the best videos I found on Youtube that captured it quite well:
conference patriotism March 16, 2008
Posted by kieslinger in : events , add a commentalthough a lot of us (European TEL researchers) are currently busy writing applications for the ICT Call of FP7 there are also a number of deadlines for paper submission coming up these days. And a number of interesting events are going to take place in Austria:
Since I could not make it to ED-MEDIA last year I would like to take the opportunity this year; especially since it is going to take place in Vienna, June 30 – July 4, 2008.
One of the conferences that has been very successful in attracting an international audience is the TRIPLE-I ’08 / I-KNOW organised by the KnowCenter and the TU Graz, Sept. 3-5, 2008. I have been there twice and enjoyed the good atmosphere, the time for social networking and the professional organisation…. and of course some of the talks.
Then there is this year’s EduMedia in Salzburg, June 2-3, 2008 organised by the people from Salzburg research. There is a special track on technology support for self-organised learners. Could be a space for discussing some of our iCamp results.
And a conference that has been around for various years now and declares itself as “the largest international and European eLearning event in Austria” is the ICL taking place in Villach, Sept. 24-26, 2008.

Second European Conference on
Technology Enhanced Learning
Creating new learning experiences on a global scale
17-20 September 2007
Greece
Website: http://www.ectel07.org (coming soon)
Supported by the Professional Learning Cluster (PRO-LC)
http://www.professional-learning-cluster.org/
With the advance of metadata standards, learning objects, Web 2.0 approaches to rip, mix & burn, wikis, blogs, syndication, user generated content, interactive TV, games and the ubiquitous availability of computing devices we can and have to offer more flexible learning services on a global scale. As one of the new objectives of the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission puts it: we need “Responsive environments for technology-enhanced learning that motivate, engage and inspire learners, and which are embedded in the business processes and human resources management systems of organizations”. An important challenge is to bridge between informal learning strategies of the knowledge society and formal competence development programmes of organizations.
After the success of EC-TEL06, the Second European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning provides a unique forum for all research related to technology-enhanced learning, including its interactions with knowledge management, business processes and work environments. This is a competitive and broad forum for technology enhanced learning research in Europe and world-wide through specialized workshops and the main conference. EC-TEL 2007 provides unique networking possibilities for participating researchers throughout the week and includes project meetings and discussions for ongoing and new research activities supported by the European Commission.
We welcome submissions describing innovative research on all relevant issues in computer science, learning, and the organizational context, as well as experience reports and case studies describing innovative applications of new learning environments and approaches.

from technology enhanced learning to social innovation… October 8, 2006
Posted by kieslinger in : events, people , add a commentthis is actually not a suggestion of how to derive social innovations from technology enhanced learning experiences. it is only to say that I am busy running from one event to the other. just back from the ec-tel06 conference I will attend the week of social innovation starting tomorrow. seems like a busy week again.
this actually calls for a reflection on how much time we spend running from one event to the next without having enough time to digest the information that we receive and the people that we meet…..maybe I get inspired during this week of social innovations.

Posted by kieslinger in : events , add a commentEARLI Biennial Conference 2007
…EARLI 2007 will provide an opportunity not only to present the results of your recent work, but also to discuss research findings with other scholars. The theme of the conference, Developing Potentials for Learning, has at least two levels of meaning: the growing importance of enriching the potentials of learning and the unidirectional trend of increasing possibilities in educational systems both play an important role in educational research… [Beno Csapo & Csaba Csikos on the Conference Website]
The 12th European Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI2007) will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from August 28 to September 1, 2007. The deadline for proposal submission is November 30, 2006. Interested parties should have no problem finding a slot among the many conference themes. [Sebastian Fiedler]

an event you should not miss… July 19, 2006
Posted by kieslinger in : Uncategorized, events , add a comment… although unfortunately I might miss it myself, is the blogtalk reloaded (Oct. 2-3, 2006, Vienna, Austria)
After a short phone conversation with Thomas Burg, one of the main organisers of this event, I just had a look at the conference website and it seems to be a good event for meeting up with researchers and practicioners around the topic of social software. It seems to be also a nice alternative to the highly academic events as I spotted some papers settled in the corporate and business context.
What a pitty that the EC-TEL conference will take place around the same time in Crete.
back in Vienna July 17, 2006
Posted by kieslinger in : events , add a commentafter a few days in Brussels, I am now back in Vienna. Actually I am already planning my next trip. I am going to be at the eLearning 2006 Conference in Bangkok, where I am going to present a paper on some experiences from the iCamp project. The event is the third one of this series.
